Yes Doc, there is wayyyyy more to blogging than just writing. In certain fields, I'd argue that the networking side of blogging is as important is not more than the writing side.

Starting a blog is often very rewarding at first as far as the experience of going through the process go. If this is done correctly, it can be a great source of income for anyone. However, there's just more to blogging than just writing. The strategies involved in making it a successful one is not any different from a real business.

Hey Marcus,

Great post here! I wholeheartedly agree with all 9 reasons you listed here. Business people have to get some education on the benfits of blogging for their business and then implement a plan (as you stated) and stay with it. Too often I hear my fellow business people starting a blog and at about the third month, they let the blog "die off." I can almost predict that they get overwhelmed, or lack of time management or some other lame excuse for not keeping the blog up.

I truly believe that a business blog is like a "marriage," you start a relationship with your own blog to help get the message and branding out to your clientele, and then you stick with it for the life of your business.

People have to realize this is a serious long term commitment!

Keep up the great posts here.

Regards,
Bruce

Michael, so very glad to hear from you my friend. Glad to hear your CEO wants to blog, but it's obvious that he's not yet seeing the whole picture. Here is the deal(with respect to a business blog):

Your website is about you and your products
You blog is about the questions your customers are asking

Sound simple? Yes, that's because it is. The problem though is that most companies make this much harder than need be. If you want, tell your CEO to call me. I'm serious. The number is 8047617924. You're welcome to call as well Michael. :-)

Hey Marcus, loved the post. I just got hired to blog for a small business and this will really help.

I have a question though. My CEO has signed on and said that blogging is the way of the future. Awesome. However, I think he would struggle to see how my experiences, in life, in the office, would relate well to the blog. He is trying to push product in the blog, which I understand, but I don't think it drives many visitors to the blog. Any thoughts on what to do?
