The Best Keyword Research and Blogging Idea Tool I’ve Ever Seen

by Marcus Sheridan

Far and away, the biggest challenge businesses have with their blogging and content marketing efforts is that of coming up with content that consumers actually care about while doing it in such a way that their search engine rankings are positively affected, which ultimately leads to more qualified traffic that can turn into leads and sales.

Many, many times here on TSL I’ve talked about this process of coming up with blog articles, with the most important “tool” or “technique” that of simply listening to the questions of our prospects and consumers, and then turning every single one of those questions into blog posts.

For over 3 years I’ve adhered to this with my pool company and have now lead the content marketing of other companies to do the same, which much success. But I’ve also come to the realization that some folks need a little extra help in their efforts to come up with more blog posts, which is why for the first time ever I’ve decided to talk about and promote a keyword tool today that has gotten me really, really excited and it’s a perfect tool for businesses serious about content marketing—Long Tail Pro. (Note***: I bought this product on my own accord from a recommendation from a friend and then decided to become an affiliate when I saw how effective it was in producing long-tail keyword targets. For those unaware, this is the first affiliate product I’ve ever promoted here on TSL)

Long Tail Keywords: The Low Hanging Fruit of SEO

For those of you unaware, there are 3 types of phrases when it comes to the way consumers search—short tail, medium tail, and long tail. Here is an example of the three:

  • Short: Blogs
  • Medium: Business Blogs
  • Long: Best Business Blogs or What are the best business blogs?

The longer the tail, the easier it is to rank in Google and the other search engines for that particular keyword phrase (hence the low-hanging fruit reference). And as we all know, the more we rank for multiple search phrases the more we’re going to see qualified leads coming into our website.

By having a complete focus on long tail phrases and answering consumer questions, I was able to elevate my pool company to the top of the industry (drastically increasing sales and profits) and have also seen this done in other niches and industries as well.

Simply put, if we’re willing to be great teachers and address every possible subject and question relating to our field, we will be rewarded.

Because I’m naturally leery of tools, I was very hesitant to make any snap judgments on Long Tail Pro. But after I read the reviews on the product and learned more about its seriously cool developer Spencer Haws, I decided to give it a go and made the $97 purchase. As soon as I started using the tool, I quickly fell in love with these two main features:

1. It offers tons of long tail ideas about any subject you can think of. (As shown in the following video)

2. Incredible analysis of any keyword phrase, including long tails—with thorough stats on the top 10 current sites ranking for that phrase, the site’s title and meta description, it’s number of inbound links, page rank, and other important metrics.

To really understand what I’m saying here, watch this video I made of how LTP works. If you’ve ever struggled to come up with blogging ideas you’ll not only love it, but quickly see how a guy like me, who has been going after the long tails in my industry for 3 years, was still able to get a TON a value from this innovative product.

YouTube Preview Image

If you don’t want to watch the video but would like to see what I’m referring to when I say the tool analyzes the existing sites that rank for a targeted keyword, here is an example of the info is shows if I type in “Content Marketing Companies:”

With Long Tail Pro, your ability to quickly gauge the competition for keyword phrases goes up drastically

As you might imagine, the ability to completely see and study how the competition is ranking for certain keyword phrases in your niche has significant value for any company. Tack this on with its other features, and Long Tail Pro makes a ton of sense for content marketers. And like I said before, the price tag is very low compared to some of the tools I’ve seen out there, with a one-time fee (NOT a monthly fee) of $97 and a 60-day, money-back guarantee.

Long Tail Pro vs. Market Samurai

One of the most similar tools compared to LTP is Market Samurai. To help those comparing the two products understand the difference, here what LTP’s developer, Spencer Haws, had to say about the two:

The primary difference is that Long Tail Pro is a big time saver over MS.  With Long Tail Pro you are able to enter in multiple seed keywords at once (rather than just 1 with MS).  So, instead of entering in 1 seed keyword, waiting five minutes, then going back and entering in one more; you can enter 5 seed keywords (for example), hit generate and then see all the keyword ideas at once!

You can also PRE-filter your keywords (so you are only left with keywords that meet your CPC, search volume, or other criteria).  Another big time saver.
Finally, you can automatically check for exact match domains (rather than checking just one at a time with MS). There are other differences, but in reality I created Long Tail Pro because I was unhappy with Market Samurai, so I specifically created it to improve on the areas that MS was lacking.

Is Long Tail Pro a Good Fit for You?

If you’re wondering if such a tool is for you, I’d simply give you this answer:

Long Tail Pro is not a magic pill. If you struggle to get motivated to write blog posts, then don’t waste your money on this product. Also, if you’ve spent a bunch of money on other products you’ve yet to review and utilize, again, LTP is not a smart investment.

But if you’re serious about content and inbound marketing, and you want to create great blog posts that lead to more traffic, leads, and sales–then you should at least give it a test drive (assuming you need content ideas). Like I said, it comes with an excellent guarantee, and you can visit the site here where there are some great videos that further explain its features. (Note**Because I was so impressed with LTP, I became an affiliate. This means if you purchase the product through one of the links here I get a percentage, for which I’m grateful to you!)

Marcus,

I haven’t used Long Tail Pro… But I can reiterate everything that you have said about Long-tail keywords.

Being in the insurance industry I have some ridiculously large competitors I have to deal with in search… That great thing about that is all my Big Box competitors spend all their time and money ranking for “insurance” so I work on ranking for “What is Bodily Injury Coverage on an Auto Insurance Policy?”

If someone is looking to buy insurance do you think they type in Insurance or something longer…?

I’ve seen the results at my Agency first hand… Long-tail works… Especially for small business.

Rock on buddy.

All of this can can be done for free, but it’s not exactly the easiest thing for non-technical, non-SEOs to learn, so the fact that LTP is one-time $97 is phenomenal really. I know a lot of people that I could teach to get this info fairly quickly, but when it comes down to it, their time is worth much more than what they believe they’ll get out of doing their own keyword research, so I would be likely to recommend something like this just to put them at ease and let them get to doing something else that they know better and really love doing.

Cool tool. Thanks for sharing, Marcus.

Pratum, what’s up brother? Good to see you man and I was fired up to see you’ll be speaking at BWNY. Rock on brother. :)

Yeah, I know some of this stuff can be gathered with free tools, like the rank checker tool as a firefox plugin and the standard Goggle keywords tool as well. But I think when these are all combined together, in such a fluid way, and also showing who is currently ranking on the first page of Google for that keyword phrase, it’s a great little tool.

Always appreciate your thoughts my man.

Hey, buddy. Yep, heard the other day that I’ll be speaking. It’ll be a crazy week. Speaking at a nonprofit conference in Florida Monday and Tuesday, flying to LA Tuesday night, client meeting all day Wednesday, red eye to NYC, speaking at BlogWorld Thursday, flying home Friday.

I agree with you that the combination and simplicity appear to be a lot of the value in this tool. I’m not saying that I’ll use it ;) but I could imagine recommending it to clients that are not as involved in keyword research as I am. That being said, it’s possible that someone from LTP could prove me wrong and convince me that it’s worth someone like me using it.

Hi Marcus,

I think you’re awesome. You’re one of the few people I do follow when it comes to growing my small business. ISorry, I just have to ask, are you paid to endorse this product. If you are, I think it would be good to be upfront about it. If you’re not, it would be good to mention it too.

Thanks, Brian

Rebecca Livermore March 20, 2012 at

Brian, regarding your question about if Marcus is paid to endorse this product, I thought I’d jump in here and point out that he stated a couple of times that he is an affiliate for this product and if you purchase using one of the links in this blog post that he’ll receive a commission. So he was upfront about that.

Reply

Marcus Sheridan March 20, 2012 at

Hey Brian, thanks for asking. I bought this product without knowing who Spencer Haws was but I knew for a long time I’ve been personally wanting to develop some type of app for long tail phrases, as it’s something that I talk about significantly when I speak or write about content marketing. So when I started using this product and realized how effective it was, then I decided to become an affiliate, which means if someone buys the product through one of the two links found in this article, then I get a percentage. This is a product I would promote regardless of whether they had an affiliate program or not, but if I can promote it and also make a percentage of the sale, it only makes sense.

You’ll find I discuss being an affiliate for it in the article and the video as well.

Again, thanks for asking Brian.

Hey Nikki, great to hear from you. Yes, Google’s keyword tool is a great start and certainly for the free tools, the best one I’ve seen. I think what you’ll find with LTP is the info it gives on the competition is the really helpful part to this and allows you to better target keywords that give you the best shot at immediate rankings.

Good luck Nikki and thanks again for dropping by!

Glad to see you starting to realize that you are leaving affiliate money on the table :)

I have used a similar product Market Samurai and I have to say that it is simply amazing (Not just because I got featured on their case study :) )

It’s much more than just a keyword research tool. The pricing is also similar. I’d definitely go with them. But how long tail pro fares against MS is yet to be seen.

Usually Warrior Forum is a great place to ask this question because a lot of IM guys use these tools.

Adarsh, thanks for the input man. Yes MS seems to be the most comparable product out there right now. I’ve used Wordtracker as well but for me as a content marketer always studying long tails and also the competition, LTP really fit the bill. I know Pat Flynn is a big MS guy and that’s a testament in and of itself.

Appreciate you dropping in my man, hope the new job is going well :-)

Andy,

On second thoughts you might be comparing apples an oranges. MS is not just a keyword research tool. It’s much more than that. It has rank tracking facility, backlink analysing facility and a lot of SEO features in addition to the keyword research module.

However what LTP did is take the keyword part and made it awesome. So if you are looking for generating keyword ideas and building niche sites LTP seems to be a much ore suitable option for you. MS folks are really smart people. You never know if they might see this review and decide to make their keyword section just as awesome :)

Spencer has done an awesome job for content marketers like us. If you are using tools like SEOmoz pro and others, you’ll know that keyword research is lacking there. He has found a niche and capitalized it with a great product. Not sure if LTP has a trial. If yes, give it a try.

Hey Chris, thanks for stopping by. There are two other similar tools I’ve seen on the market– Market Samuri and Keyword Tracker. Keyword tracker is a monthly fee and MS is a similar price range. I’ve used MS and LTP and as a content marketer, I found LTP to be a better fit for my needs. Honestly, I don’t know how anyone good spend that much time developing an app or similar product and sell it for $10.

Hi Marcus,

Great Stuff! I am learning a lot from your website (‘met’ you on Chris Brogan’s Secret Show)

I work with Property Management companies, who service specific area. For example, we’d write “How to look for Property Manager in San Francisco”, or “What to do if your tenant doesn’t pay rent in San Mateo County”.

In your experience, if the specific location is mentioned in the title, does it negatively affect traffic? I know you have a local area Swimming Pool company and I see most of your titles are global vs local. Do you feel global rank is desirable for a local company?

Would Long Tail Pro do a better job then Google Keyword tool when it comes to localized long tail keyword research?

Thank you
Alex

Reply

Marcus Sheridan March 20, 2012 at

Alex, great question. My answer to this is actually that you may want to consider having 2 blogs. For example, I do this on River Pools. If you go here you’ll see what I’m talking about: http://www.riverpoolsandspas.com/blog/local/

In your case, I think a stronger focus on local makes more sense, as that will ensure some extremely qualified and ready leads coming into your system.

As for LTP, the way it would help is by giving you the base of the Long tail phrase, and then you can just add the city/place into the title.

Does that make sense?

Good luck!!

Marcus

And like I mentioned above Alex, there is a simple refund policy for those that get it and feel the value simply isn’t there. But if I were you, if you do decide to purchase it, make sure you fool around with the competitor tool. You’ll learn a ton about the way they’re doing their SEO/content marketing in your neck of the woods, at least much faster than if you had to manually to it all yourself.

Good luck man,

“if you’ve spent a bunch of money on other products you’ve yet to review and utilize, again, LTP is not a smart investment” – that highlights a problem doesn’t it Marcus? Eric made a good point about much of this being available for free – but I think some businesses just don’t want to be bothered to because that would be too much like work, too much like right.

It may be a very helpful and useful tool, but it’s not “set and forget,” so if you are not already doing what you should be – or paying someone to be thinking, studying, researching your links, referrals and keywords – you shouldn’t bother. (Guilty: until I spend more time one the free, I can’t waste money on a good tool I’d underuse.)

This can’t – nothing can – do the WORK for you. Like you said, this is only for those serious about using their business blog to attract business. Too many SMBs are all for buying the magic automation pills and social media silver bullets; none are willing to truly invest and put in the work – then they question why it hasn’t generated results. Duh, no work in – no results out. FWIW.

Great points Davina, which is why I really wanted to stress that in this article. I use this same model when businesses approach me for content marketing help. If they’re not actually “doing it” or “trying it”, or if I sense they aren’t properly committed, then it’s a no-go.

As for LTP, I know some of its features are available free in different areas, but one thing I haven’t seen for free is the keyword competition tool, which was a huge deal for me.

Great seeing you D’, hope you’re having an excellent week. :)

Given that luckily for now I still have ideas I’m going to stick to the classic, that is Google Keyword Tool plus Insights when really I don’t know where to bang my head. But this can be done because I have a schedule of writing one evergreen post per week so I have enough time to research by myself. Also given that I used GKT wrongly in the past I’m rewriting many posts as their keywords are just too difficult to rank for.

But surely arising the need I would go for LTP. I’ve tried some other softwares but usually they are either too complicated or with many useless features. Plus once one of them blocked my account with Google for hours ’cause there were too many requests. Which caused a pagerank drop. So now I’m very careful with seo softwares.

Anyway this is how history always repeats itself: Yahoo-Google, MySpace-Facebook, MS-LTP.

But there is an army of MS affiliates around so LTP will have to fight a lot, or push its price to some hundreds dollars. ;)

Good stuff Marcus!

Glad to see you finally reviewing some premium tools and using an affiliate link to promote them. You give a crap ton of free information away on this site and I honestly don’t know how you find the time to do it.

As a long time Market Samurai user, I can say this for usine a premium tool over Google (or word tracker) free tools: You get what you pay for. Period.

I used MS for much more than just keyword research (which if I am not mistaken the keyword part is actually free), but I actually tracked results, competition, keyword difficulty, links, etc… Last month, MS ran into some issues being able to do this (mostly the rank tracking) so I had to look at other options as this is part of my business (SEO). I ended up with a $200 per month subscription to SEOmoz. Some people may gasp at that, but I see it as a business expense for me, and with half a dozen companies now paying me to track SEO for them, it pays for itself 20x over every month and makes my job easier.

Having said that, I want to finish by saying that there is this common misconception that everything can be had for free online. And while you probably can make that happen (find all the tools you need for free), it wasn’t until I started realizing that I needed better tools and started paying for them that my business took off for me (tools like Quickbooks Online, Basecamp, SEOmoz, premium themes and plugins, Aweber, etc…). That doesn’t mean go out and buy every tool you see recommended by your favorite blogger (not all of them are as honest as Marcus), but you wouldn’t build a house using only tools you could find for free would you?

Nice review Marcus!

You’re right– if we’re going to take this online stuff seriously, we need to use serious tools (assuming, as you mentioned, that we’re not just letting them waste away in some folder).

Based on your experience Keith, would you say SEOmoz is the best analytics tool you’ve ever used? What are its top 2 or 3 features in your opinion?

Hope you don’t mind the questions but again, I really appreciate your expertise here because you’re actually livin and breathin it.

Marcus, I have enjoyed reading your blog for a month or so now and subscribed to hubspot, in large part, due to your reviews (in retrospect, I should’ve signed up through you to get the consultation! But I digress…). I love reading all the seo blogs and have been blown away by what I’ve been missing for my business all these years. Learning about all this stuff has truly been my passion over the past two months even though I’m an immigration lawyer. The question I have for you and the use of LTP (and all the bunch of tools out there like MS and seo moz and neil patel’s tools, etc.) is how does it integrate with hubspot (if it even does) and do I need yet another tool when I haven’t even delved into all the stuff hubspot has to offer?

Thanks for all the great info and pics. Shout out to a fellow Virginian!

Hey Radlyn, so glad you’ve been a reader here and that you’re getting some value from the posts.

As someone who has been heavily involved in HubSpot for 3 years, I have found this tool to be a perfect compliment to HS. Why? Because HS isn’t really a strong long-tail keyword research tool. So for 97$, you can integrate that in seamlessly, while at the same time comparing your competitors and those that are currently leading the way for the keywords in your niche.

For me, everything starts with content. Without content, HS doesn’t have nearly the same value. That’s why I think a tool like this will actually help you get more for you HS money.

Good luck Radlyn!!

But would like to hear your advise on this. Through LTP keywords, do your blog title based on the given keywords (exact keyword) or can we create the ‘title phase’?

Hi, Spark -
I would recommend you use more than just the exact keyword in your titles. Use an entire phrase that makes sense and is a compelling title to your readers – but also include as part of that the exact keywords you are targeting.

Also, YES, you can also generate keywords on a local basis for any country you mentioned and many others.

Hi Spencer,

thanks for the reply. :)
so meaning that’s it’s better to search the keywords base on ‘phase’ term then within the phase term then we can add in other more words within the title. As for off-site SEO, I just create links base on the title keywords will be enough to rank. Am I right to say that?

Interesting — I usually use Google Insights to check my four or five best guesses against each other and put together a long-tail title from there, but this sounds like it would certainly be a time-saver!

It will be Sarah, especially if you’re trying better to understand the competition and what they’re doing as well. Good luck!

Great article. I am trying to write a film blog but I never realised how much SEO was needed for readership. Good advice. Thanks Marcus.

I am not sure how this software would actually benefit a user when you can glean the information for free. I think most internet users are self educated and realize they can ask all search engines the how, what, where, why questions in the search for information.

Great Article,

I enjoyed using LTP for micro niche sites however the ability to find Long Tails for blog posts are a great idea. I’m about three months into building an authority type site and I’m really excited to see what will come of all this har work. It’s already starting to show some life. Good Stuff
