That’s right, I need your help guys. Here’s my problem: If you look at the header atop this page there is one glaring weakness (And no, it’s not the goofy guy standing next to the AWESOME Lion). The problem, if you take your eyes to the upper left hand side of the page, is that there’s a large, empty black space. Do you see it? Yep, nothing there at all. But that’s about to change, and I’m calling in the infantry(that’d be YOU) to assist me with the challenge. And what is the challenge? Well, if you guessed that I needed a ‘tagline’, then you were right. Well done.
A ‘Tagline’, for those of you unfamiliar, is defined in Wiki as:
“a variant of a branding slogan typically used in marketing materials and advertising. The idea behind the concept is to create a memorable phrase that will sum up the tone and premise of a brand or product or to reinforce the audience’s memory of a product.”
For quite some time I’ve known that I was lacking in the tagline department, but I decided to actually wait until two important events had transpired:
1. I had a killer community
2. I had a clue as to who I was as a writer
You see, I don’t know if it’s possible for first time bloggers to come right out the gates clearly defining their brand identity. As many of you know, this blog started off much more ‘sales’ oriented. I wasn’t dabbling nearly as much with subjects like blogging, content, personal development, small business, branding, etc.
But as time went on, passion and inspiration touched me on multiple occasions, and so the subjects of the blog diversified into what it has become today.
Successful Taglines
Most successful bloggers come up with their own tagline. In fact, here are some blogs with their corresponding taglines that I find to be excellent:
Alex from The BridgeMaker: Simple Paths to Positive Change
Danny Brown: The Human Side of Media and the Social Side of Marketing
Frank Jennings from A Spark Starts: Life Changing Inspiration
John Falchetto from Expat Life Coach: Abroad but not alone
Bryan Thompson from Elevation Life: You: Unlimited, Unsilenced, Unleashed
Shoe Money: Skills to Pay the Bills
SEO Book: Learn, Rank, Dominate
Troy Claus: Marketing and Branding the Right Way
Brankica from Live Your Love: How to Blog Like a Star
Jason from Skyward: A Blog about Growth!
Eugene at Reality Burst: Reality Creation through Net Domination
So as I’ve been thinking about taglines, I figured why not ask my community? Why not allow the people that come to this blog, week in and week out, to help me fill in that black space in the upper left?
I Need Your Help
This is why I need your help, each and every one of you. As you’ve probably noticed, this blog is solely meant to give back to you, the reader. But today, I’m asking for more. I need your help, and it would mean a lot to me.
So whether you comment on this blog all the time or have never left on word under an article, I’d ask you to consider the following:
1. Knowing what you know about me and The Sales Lion blog, what would be a fitting tagline in your opinion?
2. If you’re not sure of a tagline, but you do know of certain words that should be included, what would be those word(s)?
Please don’t be embarrassed or at all hesitant to leave your thoughts below. There are no wrong answers here. And again, whether you can think of an entire tagline or just one or two words, that’s great.
C’mon folks, let’s let the magic of community do its thing and have some fun in the process. What say you??

The Sales Lion- Effective sales strategies for growing businesses
Hey Dan,
I like the mention of “effective sales strategies.” I hadn’t thought of that one!

Hey Dan, thanks for being the first one to chime in here bud. Really appreciate it.
we put the roar into your sales ! . i also told pentairs marketing company to get in touch with you about your blogs because you rock!
Hey Gari
Love the passion in that tagline, and thanks so much for mentioning me to Pentair. We use all of their stuff and I have a hard enough time just seeing my rep once in a blue moon
Thanks for the comment and really appreciate your kind words!
Hey Marcus,
Do you mean the black space next to the lion (that’s the only black space I see)?
If so, I think a short and sweet tagline would look really nice underneath the blog title (The Sales Lion), rather than next to the actual lion itself. You can simply move the title text up a tiny bit to make more room if you need to, but humans usually read left to right, and I don’t think it would make much sense for the reader to read the tagline first and then the title. Know what I mean?
As for tagline ideas, I’ve been struggling with the same thing over on my blog – Cash Campfire has went through a series of tagline changes over the past year, so I’m not sure how helpful I will be when helping you choose a tagline, though I’ll try. ^_^
Here are a few suggestions that come to mind (at least, the best ones I could think of!):
The Sales Lion: Where Dignity and Honor come together for Thriving Businesses
The Sales Lion: Where Dignity and Honor Create Success
The Sales Lion: Ferocious Tips for Business Domination
The Sales Lion: Royal Guidance for a Better Brand and a Fulfilling Life
The Sales Lion: Writing with Heart, Blogging with Soul
The Sales Lion: Where Your Business Kingdom Can Dominate with Integrity
In any case, I think the lion should play some type of role in the tagline. For example, what does the lion mean to you?
Make that meaning come to life in the tagline.
I went ahead and looked up various symbolic meanings of lions, and came up with the site below. This is what I used as a framework for most of the above tagline suggestions.
http://www.whats-your-sign.com/symbolic-meaning-of-lions.html
Sorry if I’m not much help!

I agree with Christina’s suggestion of putting the tag under “The Sales Lion” and sliding the design over to the left so that there isn’t a black space next to the lion. It’s stronger to link the tag with your blog name and it looks like it should fit there naturally.
I also agree with Christina that the tag should subtly allude to the lion reference for continuity. I will gnaw on this one a bit and let you know if I come up with something to share.
Rachel
Hey Rachel, and thanks so very much for chiming in here with your thoughts. Yes, I’m going to put it under the title based on Christina’s great suggestion. As for the tagline, I’m still chewing on all of the great ideas that have come in.

Hi Marcus
I think the tagline should go under the Sales Lion too. Not be separate, so as soon as someone clicks over to your blog, they see the whole and there’s no black space.
I’m sure you will figure or get someone to do it for you, so that it all stands out and shows what you stand for. I love the Sales Lion and sorry don’t have anything to add.
If I come up with anything will be back to say what it is. Your brand is definitely getting recognised and well known round the blogosphere from what I can see in my Twitter stream

Marcus, great idea here!
And, to be honest, this post hit a soft spot with me. I’ve went back and forth so many times thinking I needed a tag line immediately. Our friend Marlee has given me some great help in this area, but still at the end of the day, after putting in serious thought the connection wasn’t complete. I think what I’ve worked with in the past was right..but it wasn’t complete.
I think I’m now getting closer in line with what complete is…what The Hustler’s Notebook will is about. It’s taken me a long time and I’ve always felt a bit of the pressure to have a tagline, but each time I picked something I felt like it didn’t represent the entire scope. So this post says to me…there’s no rush – when the time is right…the time is right! Thank you for that.
Enough about me!
I admit, I’m terrible with these taglines. But if you need something cheesy, I’m your man for it!
I promise to provide some options as they come to mind. However, I want to provide quality, so I have to think on it.
I’ll be back within in the next 24 hours!

Hustle, great to hear from you big man. You’ve done quite the great job with the branding part of your blog as is, so don’t sell yourself short buddy.
But I’m glad you can relate to my premise behind ‘the evolution of a tagline’. I’ve seen your blog change quite a bit over the past few months and I’m sure it will only continue to do so. Such is the tide of life and because of that we need a tagline, IMO, that will cover us for the different phases and directions we go in. Will it always be possible? No, but I still think we should try.
Keep doing your thing brother. Appreciate your constant support JK.
Marcus

Hey Bud,
First off, Christina is an amazing copywriter, did you read her taglines? I know people in ad agencies who would spend half a day in a brainstorm sessions with all their creative department to come up with that kind of gold.
As much as others can give you ideas and certainly some great insights on how you are perceived, I think your tagline is something personal. It’s really the essence of who you are and what you do. I can tell you how I perceive you but I’m sure as hell ain’t going to tell you who you are

john Falchetto´s last [type] ..Images in social media
Christina is amazing, isn’t she John? That girl can put out some serious information.
I really, really appreciate what you’ve said about ‘the lion’, and about me John. You’ve made me really think about this, and what it all means.
You’re simply one of the best JF.
Marcus
Still thinking Marcus. Not so much a tagline really but freethinking about this, taglines usually hit on 2-3 things and not always sure why that’s a magic number, probably because 4 would be too many. YOUR 3 things, FWIW:
1) Lion. King of Jungle. Powerful. Strong. Fighter (but it’s the lioness that does the hunting.) Roar. Dominance. Leadership.
2) Sales. Numbers. Customers. Networks. Business. Marketing. Results.
3) YOU. Marcus. Smart, hard-working, passionate, real, relatable, gets it. Content. Perspective. Insight. Support. Community.
John is absolutely right about perception. There is what others already think of you, what you think of yourself and your blog and what you WANT others to think of your and your blog, what you need to project for continued growth and success.
In the words of the Governator, I’ll be back. Now to come up with a silly tweet for this.

Davina K. Brewer´s last [type] ..For love of the writing
I loved how you worded this Davina. Very flattering and kind, really made me feel pretty good. As you mentioned, it’s one thing for me to assume what others think of me, and then it’s another to actually here them tell it…So thanks for being so dang awesome.
Marcus
Marcus,
How dare you ask something of your readers instead of continuing to give selflessly?
I am expecting Ingrid to stop by any moment now with a Mufasa comment and a dialogue filled with zoo animals to break out. So you should definitely find out what the licensing costs for “Mufasa” are.
I think you should do something that plays off the whole “lion” thing. Something along the lines of “Tips to survive in the Business Jungle”. Or something like that. Although lions don’t live in jungles. They live in savannas. Not as catchy. Why are lions called kings of jungle in the first place???

Thanks for stopping by man. Your comments give me quite the smile.

Hey Marcus, great idea to ask the community to pitch in with this!
I agree with what Davina and others who have expressed that the site isn’t really just about sales – it’s about community, and growing online and offline businesses.
Given that, I’d leave out stuff strictly about online, and I’d also leave out stuff like “domination” – it sounds too aggressive, and I don’t think it’s very congruent with your style.
How about something like this: “Business: smart, with a lion’s heart.”
Danny @ Firepole Marketing´s last [type] ..No ice cream for you!
Hey Danny,
I agree – I was a bit hesitant about putting “domination” in there, but I figured I’d just keep it if only for variety.
I love “lion’s heart” by the way. When I read that phrase, I think of Aslan from the Narnia series.
Christina

Danny @ Firepole Marketing´s last [type] ..No ice cream for you!
I agree with your takes here Danny. Although the site is ‘Lion’ centric, it’s not about domination, and yes, it’s clearly more about community. Your tagline is a very good one, and I very much appreciate you taking the time to come up with one bud.
Thanks for all your support man.
Marcus
I was thinking if you needed filler, you could put my mug up there too now that we are pals and we could have two goofy guys and a lion………….
I’m not as creative as some of these folks, so I will ‘vote’ on the suggestions I have seen and like Davina, I like #6 from Christina’s recommendations. And equal share, equal vote I also like Joey Strawn’s contribution.

Thanks for the great ideas and all your support Bryan. Have a great week bud.
Marcus
To begin with Marcus, I have certain questions you must answer:
1) What do you want this blog to REALLY be about now, today?
You see, personally, when I came here the first day, I thought I was coming to learn about sales and met you writing about Tristan and his blog why he could go as wide as he choice to talk about any topic besides blogging, remember?
So, the same issue is arising today, the name you have chosen suggests something to your readers or prospective readers and when you don’t focus on living up to that name, it becomes very confusing for your community.
So the beginning I think, before any suggestion is to define your niche. Are you going to continue writing about sales or you want to totally change the niche of this blog? If you want to write about blogging, then maybe the name of the site needs a change. If you want to write about selling online, then maybe the contents you share will neglect the traditional sales force in organizations. selling online since we don’t see, is not the same as selling real life.
These are my own observations and I think, they definitely need clarification.
What is this blog going to be about: Sales or blogging, social media, personal development etc.
Your tag line will resonate from your niche. And once you do have one, you must stick to it. You are stretching your focus and that is what I suggest we address first.
Define your interest!
Tito Philips, Jnr.´s last [type] ..The TWO Kinds Of Business- Which ONE Are You Building
I appreciate your well thought out comment here Tito. In this day and age, Sales is Marketing, and sales comes from great content, blogging, business, etc. For me, the word ‘sales’ encompasses anything to do with business, as no business exists without that magical 4-letter word.
Notwithstanding, ‘The Sales Lion’ has become it’s own brand by this point. Even though I yap about a variety of things like sales, business, content, marketing, blogging, self improvement– The Lion and I have become pretty inseparable. When it comes down to it, anything can become branded, in my opinion.
But as far as the tagline is concerned, I’ve put this out to the community because they are the ones that read my stuff, week in and week out. They have their own ‘view’ as to what this blog really is (despite whatever I may think myself) and this survey has truly helped me see where they’re coming from much, much better.
Again, thanks for stopping in Tito. Have a tremendous week.

Hey there, my friend,
The energy that I feel when I read your informative posts is one of giving. You want us to go from where we ARE to where we want to be.. Whatever and wherever that is. It’s different for each of us. I never get the feeling from you that you suggest we do it YOUR way. but really in the spirit of altruism.. “As you give.. so shall you receive.” (wink)
You want your tagline to pull you in. Make you feel like you understand where we are and that your only intention is to help. (I am positive you already know this)
The tagline for Married to a chef is :Support for the restaurants main dish! – Support = what i’m offering in many different ways and to whom? the restaurants main dish = significant others in the restaurant industry.
I guess what I’m attempting to say is there probably is a formula to this… so that it doesn’t take up too much energy.
With all that said.. one suggestion for your tagline is:
“The Sales Lion – Breaking it down to Build it better” (could be literal or figurative – and it could mean pools as well)
**I also really liked Bryan Thompsons last suggestion as well: It’s not about pools anymore.” and Christinas using the word Ferocious.
xo!

Jet Aircraft to Rocket: Why are you always running so fast?
Rocket: When your backside is on fire, you too will run as fast.
The same is the case when a lion is set among a herd of gazelle. The normally sweet, soft and not always fired up gazelle can feel the heat in their backside and see how they run when a lion is anywhere near them. The normal sales people should also be fired up likewise when the sales lion is among them. I think this thought must be conveyed by the tagline here. Lion is king, leader etc. He leads the other animals in the jungle. He fires up the team. I have not yet hit upon the words but this is what I think must be conveyed by the tagline.
The Sales Lion – “set him among your team” (the words here need refinement / polish)

Marcus, have you been reading my thoughts? Seriously, I’ve been thinking about a tagline for Unlock The Door for a couple of days now, and then I read this! Spooky
I’ll send you an e-mail so we can talk more about it, but I’ve got a lot of ideas for both you and me

Glad to add my 2 cents, my friend!
Kudos for the awesome support from your community! You REALLY do get!
Christina is one awesome act to follow! Well done, Christina!!!
& herewith some notions off the top of my head…
Listen to the Lion ROAR!
Hear the Lion ROAR!
Learn to ROAR like the Lion!
Learn to ROAR like a Lion!
Unleash the ROARING Lion within yourself!
Oh, btw, I grew up in Africa and am very familiar with the roar of real lions! And Marcus, you really know how to ROAR! You can have my expert knowledge on that! Any time you want to talk about Lions, I’ll be there!
Bless you for continuing to be as inspirational as you are! AAAaaargggghhhhh!
Dave, I tell ya man, this was one of the nicest things anyone could say to me. To know that I’m ‘roaring’ in my own way and at the same time inspiring others towards success pleases me to no end.
Thanks so much for this Dave and I hope you have a wonderful week my friend.
Marcus
Marcus,
I have a great one for you. All you have to do to get it is post a video of you in a lion costume roaring at random strangers on the street.
This tagline is so powerful that it will demand attention and I guarantee it will build you creditbility and maximize your blogging brand.
Here’s what a few people I have worked with have said about my taglines:
Mark G (made up person) “Frank’s advice about what tagline I should use has greatly changed the way I do business. He is a genius.”
Sally P (also made up) “I can’t believe how simple Frank’s advice was and how life changing the tips he gave has been in my blogging . I wouldn’t have been able to do it without him.”
Now here is your chance Marcus. With 10 easy payments of $99.99, you too can have a tagline that will change your life.
But wait!!! If you sign up now I will throw in 2 irrelevant comments on your blog and a free swim in your own pool.
Here’s my idea. The Sales Lion: _______ (drew a blank)
I will come back when I think of a great one for you.
You just consider that offer I gave you. lol!

I’m horrible with this as well Marcus. I did a rather generic one, or so I’ve been told recently. So mine needs work as well. You’ve received so many wonderful suggestions I really have nothing new to offer. Sorry about that! Can’t wait to see what you decide.
Best to you.

Marlee´s last [type] ..Radical Marketing- The Second Element – Where Persuasion & Understanding Intersect
G’Day Marcus,
You really are a glutton for punishment: or are you going for the record for “most comments on a blog” Oscar?
My favourite is the largest supermarket chain in Australia; Woolworths – “the fresh food people” They have nothing to do with the US Woolworth. Bear in mind that, in your average supermarket, about 70% of the stock isn’t “fresh.”
I know that it’s fashionable to talk about “taglines” and “branding” on the web. Call it what you like. It’s worthwhile remembering that your tagline- I prefer slogan- represents the essence of your market positioning. High-sounding, morally uplifting slogans may be great for churches, community and welfare groups. But for a commercial entity seeking to appeal to the broad community……?
A couple more of my favourites; “Volvo means safety” , BMW “the driving experience” and Nike , “just do it.” And dare I remind you that you need a clearly defined business focus and target market before you can effectively crete your tagline.
I also agree with other commenters about your MGM friend. If you intend to continue using that image you slogan must be consistent with that image. For instance, “the business blogging king” would be OK. Stuff about personal growth or sensitive client response would, I think , be in conflict with the lion image. The same comments apply to the words,”The Sales Lion.” You tagline must complement and support those words.
One final thought: Duke Ellington’s initial fame resulted from the fact that he played “Jungle Music.” Think about it.
Well…..you did ask…….
Regards
Leon
OK, I read the whole post and half the comments and scanned through the rest of the comments. So if someone already said this I apologize:

By the way, thanks so much for the mention, I still think mine is not really that great
I wanna make it more shoot-ey, like I am, lol.
This is, by the way, awesome idea. No better thing than to ask peeps that read your blog, what they think about this.
Hope you get a really good one!

Oh, and thanks so much for mentioning me in your weekly review post– very kind of you lady!!
Thanks again,

I think the tag line should go under the sales lion as well.
I am horrible at writing copy but can recognize good copy!
The top two when I read through are
Mark Harai: “Empowering People through the Power of Community”
And Christina’s: Writing with Heart, Blogging with Soul

Thanks again!!!

Flattery will get you everywhere! Thank you kindly. If only I could think like you!
Here goes
1. Writing with Heart to Empower People
2. Empowering People by Blogging w/ Soul
3. Empowering People through writing with heart and blogging with soul
4. Empowering People by writing with heart.
As you can see none of the combos are as strong as each of the individual two!
My vote now is Mark Harai’s Empowering People Through the Power of Community!
Especially now as I have been involved in a few of your blogs banter: My hats off to you for creating such a community and for the community as you guys are all FAB!
Cheers,
Rajka

Said I’d be back Marcus, but still don’t have a crystal idea. I keep thinking:
Jungle = Marketplace which you’ve turned into a Community.
Lion = expertise, power, Leadership.
Sales = inbound marketing Results, by example. One of the strength of many of your posts are the real world examples you share.
Again, I go back to what YOU want to convey, are you branding yourself as an expert? Are you wanting to promote this blog as a community destination, since your goal is helping others? IDK.. I just since the name is SALES not sure you need that in there, some sort of “Marketing Prowess. Fierce Leadership. Real Results.” I’ll lurk back, see what other ideas you get. FWIW.

You’re welcome. FWIW Ari makes a good point about simplicity, and whether or not you really need a tagline.. or if it’s just something you want. It’ll be interesting to see what you decide to use.

G’Day Marcus,
Just can’t help myself. Trawling through the ocean of comments, two more things occur to me;
* a tagline isn’t about you or your business or your blog: it’s about them, the prospect or client. The Woolworths supermarket slogan, “the fresh food people,” says to shoppers “you want fresh food; get it here.” It doesn’t matter that everyone knows that 70% of what they sell isn’t “fresh.” By inference, if their fresh food is “freshest,” their dry goods must also be “fresh.”
* why do you want a tagline? You already have one; “The Sales Lion.” It’s been enormously successful for you. You’ve built up a vast and enthusiastic audience with it. We, your readers, identify you with it. Why on earth would you want to change it? If you’re concerned about the space, fill it up with a picture of Samuel Goldwyn!
There’s a story about the founder of Wrigleys from the 1940s . He was asked why Wrigleys continued to spend a small fortune on advertising when they were not only market leaders but dominated their market with some 70% market share. His reply went something like, “If you were sitting in a Pullman car in an express train roaring across the desert at 80 miles an hour, would you uncouple the engine?”
OK. I was joking about Mr. G. But it occurs to me that you might be better served using that picture of your “cubs” instead of some waffly tagline.
It’s early on Sunday morning here in Sydney. I’m off to retreat to my Curmudgeonly Aussie bolthole to meditate about what Mr. Wrigley meant.

Morning Marcus
So what do I know about TSL?
A young guy who knows about business.
Tons of energy and enthusiasm and never just never gives up.
That’s Marcus the businessman
What’s the other side.
A clue is in the RH sidebar – the Marcus clan.
Fanily man.
You’ve also posted about moral values – your account of the boy throwing a stone at you.
So that’s Marcus the man.
Put the two togethrer and my strap line is….
“The Sales Lion.
Committed to business.
Devoted to life.”
The two sides of TSL.
Cheers Marcus

I LOVED this one Keith. Really, absolutely loved it, and if I don’t use it (based on so many great ones), I’ll be turning into a blog post, because the phrase is a beautiful one my friend, and it means a lot to me that you mentioned it here.
Thanks so much for all your support Keith.

Like many others, absolutely loving Christina’s “blogging with soul” tagline, sums you up perfectly mate.
The one I had was “Because content is marketing” – but that pales besides Christina’s!
Good luck with the decision, bro’ – so many great examples already.

Hey Marcus,
Obviously don’t know you as well, but based on what others have suggested, and sticking to my own stubborn ways – where I believe a tagline should be short, sweet and in most cases – more memorable than the actual site name, I have come up with
“A Social Marketing Carnivore” or “A Social Branding Carnivore”
and as Danny said – Good luck LOL, there are some fantastic suggestions here

Whatever it is, it definitely has to evoke what you really stand for and what you mean to your readers.
To mean, I think that says that you have to include the words, or at least give the feeling that you’re talking about being, “meaningful,” “building a true connection to the consumer,” “providing the foundation for trust to emerge,” “not really about sales per se,” and….that’s what comes to mind so far. Best of luck, buddy!
