Setting Up a Video Marketing Office Studio On a Beginner Budget

Setting Up a Video Marketing Office Studio On a Beginner Budget

I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say:

Creating an office studio for your video marketing can really feel like a daunting task. Getting the budget to pull it off is even harder.

Or, is it?

Well, it turns out that building an office studio for your video marketing may not be as painful as you’d have thought. All you need is an investigative nature and an understanding of your budget and equipment costs.

In this article, I’m going to show you exactly how I achieved a basic video marketing office studio with very little budget.

If you want to know more, all you have to do is read on…

Office Studio Beginner Budget

Note: This video was shot with gear located in this article. What you see at work here is 2 lights, an iPhone 6s Plus, shotgun mic, and some Camtasia editing.

The trick to getting started with a low-cost beginner budget is to use what you have. In my case here were the parts that we used at The Sales Lion when we first got started with video.

We have since upgraded, which I am sure will be another post coming soon but, let’s dive into what you need to get going.

Video Marketing: Onboard Camera or USB Camera

I used the MAC Book Pro that I was already using for my daily workflow. It’s onboard camera worked great for the first 100 to 200 HubSpot COS and HubSpot CRM tutorials I created for The Sales Lion YouTube Learning Channel.

Of course, you can use any computer that you have laying around as long as it has an onboard camera.

What if your computer does not have an onboard camera?

If it does not have an onboard camera, you could always choose to go with a USB camera. For this route, I would suggest either the Logitech C922 Pro Stream or the Microsoft LifeCam Studio. Both are under $100.00 and will do a great job for you.

Logitech C922 Pro Stream

It’s game on for Logitech’s newest webcam

Resolution: 1080p | Features: Background removal, Low-light correction, 720p/60fps video while streaming, Stereo audio, autofocus, auto light correction

  • Great low-light capabilities
  • Background removal feature
  • Supports 720p/60fps streaming

Microsoft LifeCam Studio

A pro camera for pro people.

Resolution: 1080p | Features: Colour correction, hi-fi microphone, Skype

  • Wide field of view
  • Wideband mic for better sound

Now that you can capture video, it is time for lights, camera, action.

Video Marketing: Editing Software

Once you capture your future masterpiece, you need to edit it in a way that helps the viewer stay engaged and understand your major concept or educational point.

With this, we are going to turn to Camtasia. Camtasia is as easy as 1,2,3.

  1. Choose your footage
  2. Make your edits
  3. Create your video

Camtasia is also available for the MAC or PC and is super easy to learn and use. The folks over a TechSmith even created a video learning center to help you speed up that learning curve.

Camtasia cost $199.00 for both the MAC & PC version.

What if you don’t have an extra $200.00 in your budget for video editing software?

You could always use Movie Maker on the PC.

Man that was painful to say.

Or, launch iMovie for your MAC and get shredding through that footage.

There are also several online editors that you could give a whirl like WeVideo or Magisto.

These tools run from free to $49.99 per month.

Video Marketing: Lights, Camera, Mics, & More

You might be thinking to yourself, what if I want to step it up a notch and do a two person interview or a more creative video piece?

No problem.

No need to explode your yearly budget on equipment at first.

Camera

Use what you have. Again, in my case I used my iPhone 6S Plus. You may be using the latest Android phone, it really doesn’t matter. Many of our phones now shoot at Hi-Res (1080p) if not 4K.

When using a phone, the biggest issue to watch out for is stability. This is why you should invest in a decent tripod and cell phone mount. For these items I would suggest:

Travel Tripod: Joby Gorillapod

When I say travel tripod, I am not talking about a normal tripod made out of tin foil. Most “Traveling Tripods” are junk, so be careful. A tripod is one of the worst places to cut corners.

You may want to purchase what will be your upgraded tripod from the start.

What I am talking about is something like the Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Mini Tripod w/ BH1-01EN Ball Head that allows you to setup on a desk, wrap around a pole, or any other combination of creative setups.

Cost for the Joby Gorillapod is around $50.

Video Marketing: Light Kit

Do you cringe when you think of light kits?

Immediately you see the dollar signs flying by and the chances of you getting the needed budget begins to slip from your fingertips. No worries.

The Savage 500W LED Studio Light Kit comes with:

  • 2x Umbrella AC Socket Lamp Heads
  • 2x Daylight-Balanced LED Lamps
  • 2x Translucent Umbrellas: 33″
  • 2x Light Stands: 6′

It is super easy to setup and will add some great additional lighting to your shot.

Take a look at the image below. You will see before the light kit was being used and with the light kit being used.

Who is that handsome guy anyway?

One of the best things about the Savage 500W LED Studio Light Kit is the cost. You can get all this great light for only $135.99.

Now that you are capturing video, have some stability, and light that makes your subject pop, what would take your video up 8 notches?

Great audio!

Video Marketing: Great Audio Makes Great Video

Great audio is highly important to the success of your video. That is why I am going to give you 3 options to capture great audio.

Use another cell phone closer to your subject to capture audio and synch it during the editing process.

Use a wired lapel mic like the Miracle Sound Deluxe Lavalier.

You can purchase the Miracle Sound Deluxe Lavalier Lapel Clip-on for around $15.99.

Use a shotgun mic like the Ampridge MightyMic S.

You can purchase the Ampridge MightyMic S iPhone Shotgun Video Microphone for around $49.99.

So, if you have no gear, now you know where to start. Go forth into videolandia and set up your beginner video marketing office studio.

Video Marketing: Clear The Clutter With Backdrops

If you truly want your audience to focus on you and your message, you can not have a distracting background. There are a couple things you can do for free like, shoot outdoors or find a cool brick wall close to your office.

But then again, you might be battling some noise issues.

So to keep your video indoors you can paint a wall of your conference room a soft color or even a branded color.

You could shoot in front of a chalkboard or dry erase board as well.

Now with a little budget, you can even get a bit more creative.

For the low cost of $139.00 you could get this RISÖR Room divider.

I used this room divider for many of our HubSpot tutorials.

However, you may be in the mood for some backdrop options. If that’s the case then the Impact Background System Kit might be exactly what the video doctor ordered.

It comes with 2 stands, hanging pole and three backdrops, black, white, and green.

Pro tip: I would suggest getting some of these great Bessey Steel Spring Clamp to help keep your backgrounds tight.

The Impact Background System Kit will only cost you around $219.00.

So what are you waiting for?
